TEHRAN (IQNA) – The secretary general of the World Forum for Proximity of Islamic Schools of Thought said Iran and Iraq can serve as a model for unity in the Islamic world.

Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Shahriari

Hojat-ol-Islam Hamid Shahriari made the remark in an address to an international Islamic unity conference held in Baghdad on Saturday.

He underlined the need for development of cooperation among Muslim world scholars and said regional and international conferences held with the participation of Sunni and Shia scholars are meant to highlight the fact that enemy attempts aimed at fomenting discord in the Muslim Ummah will never be successful as long as scholars are at the service of Islam and Muslims.

He expressed hope that the outcome of the conference in Baghdad will be the strengthening of the brotherly ties among Muslims and the spirit of rapport and kindness in humanity.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the cleric reiterated Muslim world scholars’ attention to the issue of al-Quds and Palestine as a pivotal issue in the Islamic Ummah.

He also said in order to eradicate terrorism, there should be efforts to tackle its roots such as reactionary ideologies.

The one-day international conference on Islamic unity was held at Al-Mansour Hotel in the Iraqi capital on Sunday.

Religious scholars, thinkers and political figures from different countries attended the event, which was organized under the supervision of Iraq’s Sunni Awqaf Department with the cooperation of a number of the country’s religious institutions.
